The meaning of New Year 2021…

I was engrossed into watching a Neflix K-drama specifically ‘Start Up’ which I have just finished watching. I heard few people screaming count downs.

“Wait, is it close to 12pm already.” Checks the time to find it has just struck 12 and I hear fireworks. I quickly climb my bed and open the window to watch the fireworks. I live in a high rise apartment on the 17th floor that means I get a very nice view overlooking the city.

My neighbours upstairs are doing the same. I was contemplating if I should wish them new year but I just kept to myself. And then I hear a friendly gentleman from 18th floor wishing neighbour on the 17th floor happy new year 🥳 . That was a very sweet gesture. Like many of you I have been couped up in the house for the most part of the entire year and that wish touched me.

I am not really a big fan of celebrations like New Year. I think it’s an influence from my upbringing where we never celebrated anything, not even birthdays. And so I have always struggled with the idea of celebrations. But as I enter my 28th New Year, I realise the meaning of these celebrations. Like how people attach sentimental values to several objects, celebrations signify special and unique meanings to each.

To some it’s a mark for a new beginning. You may be aware of the “New Year, New Me” trend specially gaining popularity around this time. To some it’s a way to foster relations with your closed groups by celebrating together. To some like me, it means that no matter what happens, I can always come back and start afresh.
