365 Days of Daily Coding: Day 102
I have been reading a lot lately as I am trying to reduce my screen time. Too much screen time has been causing me headaches and eye pain.
My latest read is a book called “Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men”. This piqued my interest because these are related to two things that I love : policies and data.
I don’t believe in a world where men are more important than women or women are more important than men. I believe in a world where regardless of sex, gender, religion, nationality, skin color are respected and treated as equal. Alas, this is only a dream of amateur.
This book enlightened me with many hidden data biases in decision making that affects women in ways that are often intentionally or unintentionally ignored by the very authorities making those decisions to benefit the women. It also opened up new thinking that data design can and will always be susceptible to the pitfall of biases and that it is important to be acutely aware of these hidden biases cause decisions are based on these data.
I have been learning to write effective shell scripts mainly out of my desire to navigate my computer without the need of the mouse except for selecting options or menus as well as using pandas. I created a jupyter notebook to take down notes as I was learning which I have also uploaded in my git here.
